In the 1900s, Ernest Hemingway’s colleagues bet him that he couldn’t write a complete story in just 6 words. Hemingway penned the story, “For sale: Baby shoes, never worn.” Hemingway won the bet and it is said that Hemingway considered it one of the best pieces he ever wrote. Anne Phillips used her substitute day to present the same challenge to fourth grade students at Burnsville Elementary School. She introduced the students to Hemingway and his writings, and brought examples of other 6 word stories. The students then used their creative genius to write their own 6 word stories.
